Love, Peace & Saalan Greasetales of lahore October 23 the flight that never flew - and we almost never knewThursday 19th October, 2006 was not a very nice day. but why was thursday the 19th less nice than the other days of that horrible last week, considering that i was meant to fly off to karachi that very evening? well, for starters - i had pulled a nighter on wednesday, trying to finish a paper on fundamentalism, but the constant flow of more assignements due on saturday/sunday compelled me to finish those off before i left lums - because even thinking about lums in karachi is a no-no, let alone working on assignments. KHER, i had to attend classes on thursday (which i didnt) and instead worked continuously on 3 papers side by side and paused only for iftari which belive it or not was a pack of GOLDEN crisps (too bad rehan doesn’t blog) anyway i finally zoomed around the different offices dropping off my papers and ran back to the dorms to pack, do the laundry, tidy the room, and found the time to dance around in the rain :) ammar chachu came to pick me and sharah up and while loading the wet luggage into the car, he asked us if we confirmed with the airport if our flight was on time…now considering how there wasn’t an exact thunderstom raging, we naturally assumed tht the flight wouldn’t be cancelled for petty rain….famous last thoughts - we reached the airport along with half of the karachiite luminites and what do we find out? the 10pm flight is now leaving at 2AM!!! after much huffing and puffing, we make our way to the waiting lounge where a glass soundproof wall divides the international departures from the domestic ones and who do we see on the other side? MIMI! hahah she had left for the airport a good hour before us and her flight to dubai was delayed as well. it was super funny how we couldn’t hear each other so we tried playing dumb charades for a while, and then resorted to typing out msgs on our cell phones and pressing those to the glass (wata cheapness! we are truly hostelites) kher, after getting free PIA dinner (which truthfully wasn’t that bad - or maybe i just had a crappy iftari - haha now i’m glad rehan doesn’t blog!) me and sharah decided to roam around upstairs and we left our luggage with some lums seniors…so up there, we see azam down there and he’s talking to the check-in counter ppl…we started calling his name out and the lost soul wasn’t looking up and when we finally started laughing we see his stressed face looking up at us and he was asking what our plan was….hm, insert two drowsy confused faces and we later realized that not only was our flight delayed, it was completely cancelled for the night!! so it was 1 am and our flight was now leaving friday 11am…what was my first impulsive reaction? i whipped out my cell phone and called rahaaaan….haha, i owe this little dude big time for that night, he was truly our knight in rusted armor (hey it was still raining) we ended up stuffing our re-called luggage into his santro and skidded our way back to his place where maéen (his younger sis) talked to us non-stop till sehri, while aunty forced us to eat garam parathey and i actually had kheer! i called up rehana phupo at this point and asked for another driver to get us to the airport AGAIN (since the last driver was so unreliable) lol rehan dropped us to lums after sehri, and i swear, the sight of tht entrance gate when we had just left it so gleefully 8 hours ago was highly depressing! we had to endure the teasing of all the dorm girls who we had snubbed when we left the previous night but we were so dead, it really didn’t matter. leave we did, eventually (again after another hour delay) at friday noon and henceforth, I, Ayesha Mulla shall try my level best NOT to travel with PIA again….oh damn, I have a return ticket. October 11 pause. breathe. resume.i dont know why or how time is flying past so quick, neither am i sure if i want it to do so (ooh lets make a list)
if time rushes past as it has been rushing anyway:
a) my midterms will be over and done with in 2 days
b) my shopping will finally be packed
c) i will get to spend at least 3 iftaris with the entire family (something tht hasnt happened for 2 yrs)
d) eid = eidiiii
e) karachi for 10 days = shopping for 4 days
f) leaving lahore means leaving the group project on the shoulders of the lahoris (eep not too sure i'm comfortable with that!)
now on the other hand, if time were to completely zonk out and snooze for a while:
a) i might be able to experience ramzan without having to rush off to ridiculous classes tht dont mean anything
b) i want to be able to sit down at iftari and make a proper duaa instead of standing in line at the pdc and asking constantly if the azaan has gone yet or not
c) i could give some time to the group project instead of pestering junaid to tell me whats going on
d) i dont remember the last time i sat on the Bench under the Tree, or even the Sidewalk with friends and did absolutely nothing
hmm.
on a random note, magical realism is a course i've put on the sidelines which is a little sad but hey something has to go at the end of the priority list...i got my first essay back and its an A!! *claps hands in glee* nothing like a lovely grade in red ink to put you in a good mood for the rest of the day :)
September 26 Ramadhan # 3Ramadhan Mubarak everyone and one should pray that we all utilize this blessed month in the right way :)
the new class-timings this Ramadhan are literally going to kill me. can you even try getting up after sehri (4.20am) for a 7.30am class? i mean hello, getting to the normal 8.30am classes was just about all i could handle....today wasnt that bad, hop skipped and jumped around classes, the library, labs, etc. my socio class was a joke - Dr.B actually walked out for a full 40 mins coz half the class hadnt done the readings... if i was a freshie, that would probably encourage me not to do any further readings but they're actually quite a docile bunch.
today's iftari was absolute bliss - first i had to drag myself to the dorms 15 mins before the azan and dread the prospect of attempting to fry something edible (altho we have decided in the greater interest of everyone's health, that i should be in charge of washing the dishes) and lo and behold, razia's beloved (actually everyone's beloved) shalim uncle had actually sent over an entire iftari-buffet! may Allah bless his soul, this man received many heart-felt duas today thats for sure :)
and paper plates! dude that is just too cool.
we couldnt buy bread today. AGAIN. is something wrong with the giant Dawn company? why are we not getting our sliced bread?! September 16 a spoonful of sugarregardless of the fact that there was no medicine to go down, i still need sugar intake! its crazy how the last few days my craving for ice cream has reached new heights and the burden of a runny nose and sore throat still hang in the balance. [ insert sneeze # 235 ] gesundheit? dankashun :D
ahem. so yes, not the best weekend to fall sick and worse yet, not the best time for both myself and mimi to contaminate room 206 fully full. its funny becoz i have a feeling i passed it on to the poor girl a day later, so the symptoms that affect me one day are clearly visible the next day with mimi. since i'm feeling a world better now, thus according to my calculations, tomorrow both of us will be healed to a great extent inshAllah.
i certainly hope so, i mean hello? how can you have fun at a rock concert with a blocked nose? EP, MHB, Noori and Call...should be a worthwhile event (i sound like i'm actually paying for the ticket, muhaha) the advantages of having event-managing-freaks for friends definitely makes my life easier. i hope i get a nice shiny badge for backstage...hm, on second thoughts i might want hall management. chalo, we'll decide on the spot tommorrow :)
Dr. B has left lums for a week which means a) no 8.30am classes b) no TA evening classes either. yay! this should give me ample time to dig into the overload of reading i've been putting off plus i have to come up with a quiz for the socio class. oh yea have to start working on the topic for the documentary that we have to make for culture&media....with junaid, azee and hamza in my group, i think this will be the first project i'm not willing to take charge of! lol, those boys are film-editing-genuises, again - life made easy :)
